What we believe. Presbyterians affirm that God comes to us with grace and love in the person of Jesus Christ, who lived, died, and rose for us so that we might have eternal and abundant life in him. As Christ’s disciples, called to ministry in his name, we seek to continue his mission of teaching the truth, feeding the hungry, healing the broken, and welcoming strangers. God sends the Holy Spirit to dwell within us, giving us the energy, intelligence, imagination, and love to be Christ’s faithful disciples in the world. Following Jesus, we are engaged in the world and in seeking thoughtful solutions to the challenges of our time. The Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) website has a resource page that gives more detail on a variety of theological issues.
PC(USA) Overview – The PC(USA) is the largest of all presbyterian denominations in the United States. Our 10,000 churches are built on the foundation of our relationship with Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. Salvation is a gift from God which cannot be earned, rather it is only received by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8). We are “reformed” which means we follow the theology that was inspired during the reformation, and that has developed throughout the centuries since. One of the tenets of the PC(USA) is that we are “reformed and always reforming,” a citation of our view that scripture is alive and the Holy Spirit speaks the truth to all of us, regardless of where we are in our Christian journey. First Presbyterian Church of Greer is a part of the Foothills Presbytery, which consists of the 40+ churches of the Upstate of South Carolina.
First Presbyterian 101 – Several times a year, a class is offered that provides an overview of what our church is all about, both on the local level, as well as within the PC(USA). The class is broken down into three sections: Polity, which is the term to describe our church government, Theology, and the History of our church . It’s recommended for all new members, and anyone who wants an idea of why we do what we do. Classes will be announced as they are planned throughout the year.
